LIVE — THIS DEAL CLOSES AS YOU SCROLL
§ 1 / 6 — THE CAR
A 2019 Golf with an honest odometer.
Seven years of school runs and one trip to Cornwall every summer. The V5C log book is on the kitchen table, and the agreement starts by pinning down exactly what is being sold: registration number, make and model, VIN, mileage. So “the car” can never later become “a different car”.
WHY THE MILES MATTER: THE MILEAGE IN WRITING IS THE BUYER’S PROOF, AND THE SELLER’S. THE MOT HISTORY ON GOV.UK SHOWS THE MILEAGE AT EACH TEST.
§ 2 / 6 — THE SELLER
Sarah, letting go of it.
She confirms what a buyer cannot see by kicking the tyres: that she owns the car and is the registered keeper in the log book, and that no hire purchase or other finance is still owed on it. One sentence, and a whole category of nightmares is off the table.
§ 3 / 6 — THE BUYER
Daniel, from an online advert.
Two strangers meeting over an advert, which is exactly why this document exists. Daniel has inspected and test-driven the car, on insurance that covers him to drive it. What he saw is what he is buying; anything untrue he was told is another matter, and § 5 deals with it.
§ 4 / 6 — THE PRICE
The tea does its work.
Asking price £8,950. Twenty minutes, one stone chip and two mugs of tea later: £8,450, by bank transfer at the handover. Watch the document: the negotiation happens in ink, and the final number is the only one that counts.
ALWAYS: A BANK TRANSFER THAT HAS CLEARED, OR CASH COUNTED TOGETHER. THE KEYS CHANGE HANDS WHEN THE MONEY HAS ARRIVED.
§ 5 / 6 — THE TERMS
“As seen” means what it says, and no more.
As seen covers the stone chip Daniel saw and the parking sensor Sarah listed. It does not cover anything she said about the car that was untrue. The handover has a date and a time, and the green “new keeper” slip changes hands while DVLA is told on a phone beside the car.
§ 6 / 6 — SOLD
Two signatures, one handshake.
Both sign, both keep a copy, and the Golf drives off to a new address, taxed and insured in Daniel’s name. The agreement and the receipt fit on three pages, the handover record and the checklist on one each: five minutes to fill in, years of arguments avoided.
Required? No, but without one it is word against word
CopiesTwo identical copies, both signed by both
As seenDoes not cover an untrue statement about the car
DVLATold by the seller at the handover; the buyer gets the new keeper slip
Tax and insuranceThe buyer’s, before driving away: the tax is not transferred
Change of mindNo right to cancel between private individuals
SCHEDULE B — THE ALTERNATIVE
With an agreement, or with a handshake.
With an agreement
§Price, date, mileage and condition, in writing and signed by both.
§“As seen” has a limit: anything untrue the seller said is still the seller’s problem.
§Finance is declared, and paid off against the lender’s letter before the keys change hands.
§A payment that matches the agreement, and a receipt for it.
With a handshake
·Word against word, from the first disagreement.
·“You said it was fine” against “you saw it yourself”, for ever.
·A finance company asking for a car you thought you had paid for.
·Cash in a car park, and nothing to show for it.
SCHEDULE C — CONSIDERATION
